Do You Have a Secure Website?
Our personal information seems to be everywhere these days. Not only do we share our phone numbers and emails with social media platforms, but we submit them to forms on websites, or have them taken by whatever new app we used that day.
With the internet the way it is, it’s important to make sure you aren’t putting your information at risk by accidentally disclosing your information. Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think! Here is more information on website security as well as tips and clues to make sure everyone is safe!
SSL Certificates
Secure Sockets Layer (or SSL) is a certificate that establishes a secure connection between the site you are visiting and your browser. It might sound a little boring but stay with me! By having this, it is ensured that when information is submitted on your site it is immediately encrypted and hackers are unable access it.
These certificates are established through Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) and can be seen in the search bar of your browser (examples in the next section!). On the other hand, Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) does not include a security component and leaves your information susceptible to leaks. Here’s how to check if your squarespace website (or the website you are browsing) has this magical safety bubble around it:
Check Your Search Bar
To see if your site has an SSL Certificate and is secure, look in the search bar on your browser. Notice the “https://” and padlock in the image on the left-hand side. This means your site is SECURE! The image on the right is “http://” and displays an “i”. This means information is at risk to attackers.
How to Turn on SSL in Squarespace
Go to your website dashboard
Settings
Advanced
SSL - notice if it is marked as active or inactive
If it is inactive, click SSL and click Secure (Preferred)

The Perk of Squarespace
Squarespace will generally activate your SSL automatically once you sign up for your subscription with them. Because Squarespace is an all in one platform, there’s very little need (if any) for external coding and plugins. This is why I love Squarespace so much. It makes managing a website for the long haul 100% easier unlike Wordpress.
